Mapping the Sacred: The Haram Region of Makkah

Year 2017, Volume: 14 Issue: 2, 24 - 47, 28.12.2017

Abstract

Islam in the seventh century advanced the idea of sacred space and

boundaries right from its outset. Identifying from the beginning two regions

of divine archetype, namely around the Ka‘bah and al-Aqsa Mosque.

A third centre was latter incorporated after the migration to Madinah,

namely the Prophet’s Mosque, as the last space to be enshrined within the

Islamic creed. Sacred regions or sanctuaries were endorsed or established,

with mosques at its centre, as part of divine sanctification to the site and

region. The Haram region of Makkah will be investigated in this paper, in

addition to another broader region; the stations of mawaqit, in order to

map out the extent of the sacred and its boundaries.

Kutsalı Konumlamak: Haram Bölgesi-Mekke

Year 2017, Volume: 14 Issue: 2, 24 - 47, 28.12.2017

Abstract

İbrahim’in monoteist inanç pratiklerine dayanan

bakiyeyi devralan pagan Araplarda da g.rülebilir.
