Bulgar Kralı Kaloyan (1197-1207): Bölgesel Bir Güç Olma Çabaları ve Haçlılara Karşı Mücadeleleri

Öz

1188’den tahta çıkışına kadar Bizans Sarayı’nda rehin tutulan Kaloyan, iktidarı eline aldığında emekleme aşamasında bulunan bir idare teslim almıştır. Henüz yeni tesis edilmiş olan bu idare Balkanlarda Sırp, Macar ve Bizans güçleri ile çatışma halindedir. İşte bu minvalde bölgede tutunma savaşı veren Kaloyan bir yandan bahse konu ülkelerle mücadele ederken diğer yandan Papa III. Innocent ile müzakerelere girişerek II. Bulgar Krallığı’nın meşruiyetini sağlamaya gayret etmiştir. Haçlıların gelişinden sonra ise coğrafyanın kaderini belirleyecek uzun soluklu çatışmalar baş göstermiştir.
Çalışmanın giriş kısmında Kaloyan’ın ağabeyleri olan Peter ve Asen’in, II. Bulgar Krallığı’nın kuruluşundaki rolleri incelenmiştir. Birinci başlıkta Kaloyan’ın, Balkanlardaki mücadelesi ve Papa ile yazışmaları kaleme alınmıştır. Burada onun iktidarını anlayabilmek için elzem bir konu olan mektuplaşmalar bilhassa ön plana çıkarılmıştır. İkinci başlık Bulgar Kralı’nın, Haçlılar ile girdiği ölüm-kalım mücadelelerine odaklanmıştır. İstanbul’u ele geçirmeyi başaran Latinlere karşı Kaloyan’ın beklenmedik yükselişi ve onun bölgenin geleceğine yaptığı etki, tafsilatlı bir şekilde aktarılmıştır. Müteakiben elde edilen verilerin ışığında çalışma tamamlanmıştır.
