The new Turkish state was founded on the territories of the Ottoman Empire after World War I was built on a nation-state identity. With the proclamation of the Republic, the efforts to create a new nation for the new regime led to history writing and teaching to be means of identity transfer. Thus, textbooks, especially history textbooks, played an important role in the ideological transfer of the new regime to students composing the broad mass of society. This study analyzes history textbooks taught at middle schools, which sometimes referred to postprimary schools under primary education and some other times referred to pre-high schools under secondary education in Turkey. To this end, the study primarily used the Journal of Communiqués of the Ministry of National Education of Turkey, resolutions of the Board of Education of the Ministry of National Education, resolutions of the Board of Science (Heyet-i İlmiye), resolutions of the national education councils, and secondary school curricula. The study employed the document analysis method and categorized the periods in which history textbooks were taught. The categorization was based on political trends and historical perspectives of the relevant period. The study also drew up tables for the years in which history textbooks were introduced into the curriculum and in which they were abolished. Thus, it was possible to evaluate the reasons why history textbooks were written by different authors and printed by different publishers at certain periods
I. Dünya Savaşı sonrasında Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun toprakları üzerinde kurulan yeni Türk devleti ulus-devlet kimliği üzerine temellendirilmiştir. Cumhuriyetin ilanı ile birlikte yeni rejime yeni ulus oluşturma çabaları tarih yazımı ve öğretiminin bir kimlik aktarımı aracı olmasına sebep olmuştur. Bu çerçevede toplumun geniş bir kitlesini ifade eden okullardaki öğrenciler için yeni rejimin ideolojik aktarımında ders kitapları özellikle tarih ders kitapları önemli bir yer tutmuştur. Araştırmada bazı dönemlerde ilköğretim içerisinde değerlendirilerek ilkokul sonrasındaki eğitim ve öğretimi ifade eden bazı dönemlerde ise ortaöğretim içerisinde değerlendirilerek lise öncesi eğitim ve öğretimi ifade eden ortaokullarda öğrenimde olan tarih ders kitapları incelenmiştir
