Abstract Colchicine alkaloid was isolated from the seeds of Colchicum species (Colchicum autumnale Fam. Liliaceous, Güz çiğdemi) by Pelletier and Caventou in 1820. Dioskurides was aware of this poisonous plant. Its name comes from Colchis on the Black Sea areas (Anatolia). A major use of colchicine is as an anti-inflammatory agent in the treatment of acute gouty arthritis. It was used ın ancient Egypt and also in Europe during the Middle Age for this purpose. Nowadays, colchicine has been shown to be safe and effective in the prevention of pericarditis.
