EVALUATION OF THE PARENTAL ACCEPTANCE TOWARDS BEHAVIORAL MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES UTILIZED BY DENTISTS IN PEDIATRIC PATIENTS
Abstract
ABSTRACT Dentists utilize different behavioural management techniques during dental treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate parental attitudes toward behavior management techniques used during dental treatment of children. Parents of one hundred children aged between 1,5 and 10 years who attended the Department of Pedodontics at Istanbul Univercity, Faculty of Dentistry participated in this study. Tell-show-do, voice control, pyhsical straint, hand-over-mouth, conscious sedation and general anesthesia techniques were explained to the parents prior to treatment and dentists allowed parents' presence during dental treatment. At the end of the treatment, parents completed a questionnaire requesting demographic and behavioral information as well as the parents' attitudes toward the management techniques. According to results, "tell-show-do" was found the most acceptable technique by a large majority of parents (%98) and giving information about the details of dental treatment increases the acceptability of the techniques utilized by dentists.
