Kentsel sürdürülebilirliğin sağlanması amacıyla, Ray Oldenburg’un Üçüncü Yer Teorisi’nden hareketle ev ve iş dışında, özellikle mahalle ölçeğinde açık alanlarda aktif bir kamusal yaşamın mümkün olduğu savunulmaktadır. Fred Kent’in öncülüğünde gelişen placemaking hareketi çerçevesinde hayata geçirilen uygulamalar, karar süreçlerine halkın katılımının kent mekânını dönüştürücü etkisini göstermektedir. İnsan ölçeğini esas alan ve planlama süreçlerinde yerel aktörleri güçlendiren bu yaklaşımın, mahalleleri kademeli biçimde dönüştürerek kentleri doğal ekosistemle yeniden bütünleştirme potansiyeli taşıdığı değerlendirilmektedir.</p>

<p>Urban policies that disregard the fact that the city is part of the ecosystem and reduce cultural fabric to a single-dimensional design paradigm lead urban residents to become alienated from imposed spatial forms and, over time, indifferent to their environment. In pursuit of urban sustainability, this study draws on Ray Oldenburg’s Third Place Theory to argue that an active public life is possible outside home and work, particularly in open spaces at the neighborhood scale. Practices implemented within the framework of the placemaking movement, advanced by Fred Kent, demonstrate the transformative impact of public participation in decision-making processes on urban space. This approach, which prioritizes human scale and empowers local actors in planning processes, is evaluated as having the potential to incrementally transform neighborhoods and reintegrate cities with the natural ecosystem.</p></trans-abstract>
