The îreaîabiîity of a paper miîî wastewater by adsorption and activaîed sîudge
methods \vas investigaîed. Alîhough a wastewater treatmenî faciîity, which ~works 'with coaguîationfloccvlalion
methocf, exists at this papermiîî, îtdoes nol \vork satisfactoriîy toreduce COD and BOD)
under îhe allo\vabîe vaîves ofthe Turkish Water Polîuîion Control Regulaîion. First, adsorpsion wUh
p(rwdered acîivaîed carbon experiments . were done. Since the required reduction ofCOD could not
been achiaved, coagvlation-jîocculütion wilh alum followed by adsorpsion expenments 'were
conducled. This was aho not satisfacîory. Finaîly, activated sludge method vvas applied. it was' found
îhaî when the wastewater is not heavily polîuîed (COD<600 mg/l) activated sludge treatmenl is
sufffdent alone, but far heavity polîuted samples it mvsî be followed by an aîum coagulationftoccuîaîion
step.
