AbstractInspired by the actor-centered approach of the new diplomatic history, the present study offers a snapshot of seventeenth century Ottoman-Austrian relations. The diplomatic mission of Ottoman ambassador Recep Aga in Vienna between 1628 and 1629 has been examined on the following premises of this novel approach: the use of titles by the Ottoman ambassador during his mission to Vienna, performative diplomatic practices (exchange of the Ottoman and Austrian ambassadors at the border, the Ottoman ambassador’s entrance ceremony to Vienna, imperial audiences given by the Austrian Emperor to the Ottoman ambassador) and the treatment of emissaries (alimentation and accommodation). The study suggests that following the Peace Treaty of Zsitva-torok in 1606, diplomatic practices between the two powers were reshaped in an almost experimental fashion. Notwithstanding the conflictual nature of these diplomatic encounters, the Recep Aga embassy shows that the new set of diplomatic practices was marked by a constant concern for reciprocity.</p>
