Osmanlı coğrafyasında yetişen bir bitki olan meyan kökü, Osmanlı toplumu tarafından bilinmekteydi. Şifa ve keyif verici olarak istifade edilen bu bitkinin Batı endüstrisi tarafından keşfedilmesi, binlerce yıllık geleneksel kullanımını değişime uğrattı. Böylelikle meyan ve yetiştiği coğrafya için yeni bir dönem açıldı. Endüstriyel kapitalizme entegre edilen meyan kökünün kullanım alanı olabildiğince genişledi, bitki bir anda olağan üstü değer kazandı. Bunun neticesinde meyan kökünün yetiştiği Osmanlı memleketleri bilhassa Aydın ve civarı, meyan kökü ticareti ile ilgilenen yabancı şirketler için cazibe merkezi haline geldi. Evvela İngiliz MacAndrews & Forbes olmak üzere birçok yabancı ve yerli şirket bu işi yapabilmek için sıkı bir rekabete giriştiler. Bu bağlamda Osmanlı memleketlerinde yetişen meyan bitkisi üzerine yaşanılan emperyalist rekabet ve neticesinde ahalinin, arzın, nebatat ve hayvanatın nizam ve intizamının bozulması çalışmamıza konu olmuştur
Licorice, a plant which grew in Ottoman territories, was known by the Ottoman society. Initially it had been utilized as recovery and delighting; however, after it was explored by the Western industry, its traditional usage for thousands of year changed drastically. Thus new area started for licorice and its geographical area. The usage of licorice, which was integrated with industrial capitalism, was as far as broaden and instantly the plant gained extraordinary value. As a result of this, Ottoman territories where the licorice could grow especially Aydın and its environment became a center of attraction for foreign companies which took an interest in licorice trade. Being in the first place British MacAndrews & Forbes there were many foreign and local companies competed head to head for doing this business. In this context as a result of imperialist rivalry on the licorice, grew in Ottoman territories, and its deterioration over law and order inhabitants, places, plants and animals have been subjected to this study
