Birinci Balkan Savaşı sırasında Osmanlı ordusunun yaşadığı hezimet ve Balkanlardaki Türk topraklarının kaybedilmesi İttihat ve Terakki idaresini ve ülkedeki vatanperverleri endişeye sevk etmiştir. Vatanın bekası endişesiyle İttihat ve Terakki idaresinin davetiyle, ortak kaygılar ve hedefler doğrultusunda bir araya gelen siyasi fırka temsilcileri, cemiyet mensupları, gazeteci ve yazarlardan müteşekkil aydınlar Müdafaa-ı Milliyye Cemiyeti’ni kurmuştur. Cemiyet, devlet imkânlarının kısıtlılığı nedeniyle halk temelli olarak yürütülen çalışmalarla orduya ve ihtiyaç sahiplerine yardımı amaçlayan örgütlü bir cephe gerisi yardım teşkilatı olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. Ayni ve nakdi yardımlar, sıhhi ve askerî hizmetler, irşat ve tenvir faaliyetleri ve çeşitli sosyal etkinliklerle Balkan Savaşları ve Birinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında ülke sathında büyük bir yardımlaşma ağı oluşturan cemiyet, savaş içinde beliren ihtiyaçlara ve tehlikelere karşı millî ve manevi kuvvetleri teyakkuz hâlinde bulundurmuştur. Bu suretle ülkedeki birlik ve beraberlik anlayışını pekiştirerek, devleti ayakta tutma çabasında olmuştur. Bunun yanı sıra Millî Mücadele döneminde ortaya çıkan sivil direniş örgütlerine miras olarak ciddi bir tecrübe ve yetkin kadrolar bırakmıştır. Ülke içinde hızla teşkilatlanan cemiyetin etkin görevlerde bulunan mahalli teşkilatlarından biri de Bolu Şube-i Merkeziyyesi olmuştur. hedeflerinin, faaliyetlerinin ve öneminin daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkı sağlamak amaçlanmıştır
The complete defeat that the Ottoman State suffered at the time of Balkans First War and the loss of Turkish territories in Balkans caused the Administration of Union and Progress ve patriots in the country to have become anxious. With the anxiety and worry for the permanency and continuity of the homeland and with the invitation of the Administration of Union and Progress, representatives of the political parties, members of society, intellectuals consisting of journalists and writers who came together in line with the common anxiety and targets established the Society of National Defense. The society, due to shortages of facilities of the state, with the works based on the people, had been created as the aid and relief organization working behind the frontline aiming to provide and relief to the army and the poor and needy people. The society which formed and created a huge nationwide aid and relief network with aids in kind and in cash, healthcare and military services, guidance and enlightenment movements and activities, and various social events at the time of Balkan Wars and the World War One kept the national and moral forces as watchful and vigilant against some needs and dangers which had been determined in the war. Thus, the said society tried to keep the state alive and self-sufficient by reinforcing the understanding of unity and solidarity in the country. Besides, the society left a serious experience and competent staff as the inheritance to the nongovernmental resistance organizations which came up at the time of the National Independence Struggle. One of the regional organizations which rendered effective duties of the society that was rapidly organizing within the nation was Bolu Central Branch.In this study information has been provided about the structural organization of Bolu Central Branch of the Society of the National Defense BCBSND at the time of Balkan Wars and World War One and its works which were performed in order to meet the vital needs of the army and the people who are in need of aids have been specified. Thus, on the example of BCBSND, it has been aimed to make contribution to the works related with the regional/local organization of the Society of the National Defence and to better understanding of objectives, activities and importance of the said society.
