SOLON AND THE LAW AGAINST NEUTRALITY

Year 2018, Issue: 30, 89 - 98, 15.01.2018

Abstract

Despite his fame for his neutrality and advocacy of socio-political stability, some ancient authors, most notably, Aristotle
attributes a law to Solon that forbids neutrality as well as passivity in times of civil strife. While some strongly argue against
the authenticity of the law, some put forward several arguments in favor of its authenticity. After roughly mentioning the
economic and social circumstances that lead to both Solon’s appointment to an eponymous archonship and his reforms, I
will take up the issue of the authenticity of the so-called Solon’s law against neutrality and explicate the arguments given on
both sides.

SOLON VE TARAFSIZLIK KARŞITI YASASI

Year 2018, Issue: 30, 89 - 98, 15.01.2018
