Abstract

Objective: This research was conducted to determine the relationship between fear of compassion and commitment to professional values in nursing students.
Method(s): This descriptive and relational study included 121 nursing students at a university in 2022. Data were collected using the Student Identification Form, the Fear of Compassion Scale, and the Nurses' Professional Values Scale-Revised. The data was evaluated percentage, mean and Spearman correlation analysis were used, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test were used in non-parametric analysis were used.
Results: According to the Fear of Compassion Scale of the students, the level of fear of showing compassion to others was close to the average, however, it was determined that the level of fear of responding to the compassion from others, and the level of fear of showing understanding and compassion for oneself were below the average. It was determined that the mean score of the Nurses' Professional Values Scale-Revised of the students was above the average. It was found that there was a weak and negative significant difference between the level of fear of showing self-understanding and compassion and commitment to professional values (p<0.01). In addition, there was a statistically significant difference between gender and the sub-dimensions of Fear of Compassion (p<0.05).
Conclusion: It has been determined that the level of commitment to professional values increases as the level of fear of showing understanding and compassion towards oneself decreases.
