Abstract

Metaphorical Analyses of Freedom, Justice and Goodness Value Perceptions in Young People

Year 2024, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 84 - 94, 31.12.2024

Abstract

This study aims to examine the meanings that university students attribute to the concepts of freedom, justice and goodness through metaphorical analysis. Based on the findings of Çelik et al.'s (2022) “New Generation Living Abroad Trends and Values Research”, it was revealed that these values are important for young people. The study was conducted with data collected online from 432 university students across Turkey. The participants were asked to produce metaphors about the concepts of freedom, justice and goodness, and the data obtained were coded and categorized through content analysis. The results of the analysis showed that the concept of freedom was mostly associated with the categories of “basic need for life” and “nature”; justice with “equality” and “right/justice”; and goodness with “happiness” and “nature and innocence”. These findings reveal how the meanings that young people attribute to these values are shaped in individual and social contexts and the place of these values in young people's mental representations. The study offers important suggestions for addressing these values in the context of education, social policy and youth studies.
