Objective: Condensing osteitis (CO) is sclerotic changes caused by bone against low-grade inflammation and diagnosis of the disease is made radiographically. The purpose of this retrospective study is to investigate the causes and incidence of CO in a group of patients who applied to Akdeniz University Faculty of Dentistry.
Material- Method: One thousand seven hundred twenty five panoramic radiograps taken from patients who applied to Akdeniz University Faculty of Dentistry Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology with various complaints were evaluated retrospectively. The frequency of CO, location the presence of treatment in the tooth with CO, the treatment type, and the relationship of CO with gender and age were evaluated. p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: CO was detected in 46 of 1725 patients between the ages of 13-72. CO was more common in mandibular first molars and root canal treated teeth, and this was statistically significant. No significant difference was found between the genders in terms of incidence.
Conclusions: This study showed that CO was more common in patients treated with root-canal treatment, unlike previous studies conducted in other countries and in different regions of the same population.
