Abstract

•Conventional radiographic modalities used to evaluate of the urinary system in children

Radiological studies used to evaluate the urinary system play an essential role in the evaluation and follow-up of many disease states in children. There are many ways to image the pediatric urinary system. It is crucial that each test be performed in the optimum manner, and this is possible only with knowledge of the nuances of technique. Although there have been numerous recent advances in diagnostic imaging technology, conventional imaging methods commonly have been used at present. These advances have altered the imaging strategies for many conditions affecting children. Intravenous urography is useful in assessing the anatomy and function of the kidney, collecting system, and bladder. Evaluation of the lower urinary tract with voiding cystourethrography is indicated when bladder dysfunction, vesicoureteral reflux or bladder outlet obstruction. Also, renal ultrasonography is often the initial, non-invasive procedure in evaluation of a child's urinary tract. Each of the radiographic modalities has several advantages and limitations.

Key words: Urinary system, radiographic study, children, ultrasonography
