On dokuzuncu yüzyılda doğa bilimlerinde yaşanan gelişmeler ve bu gelişmelerin teknik alanlardaki yansımaları, dönemin her kesimden insanını derinden etkilemiştir. Sosyal bilimlerin de bağımsız disiplinler olarak ortaya çıkmaya başladığı bu dönemde, sosyal bilimlerin kurucuları da bu gelişmelerden etkilenmişlerdir. Jules Verne, Yirminci Yüzyılda Paris adlı romanını tam da bu gelişmelerin yoğun bir şeklide yaşandığı dönemde kaleme almıştır. Roman, on dokuzuncu yüzyılda ve yirminci yüzyıla ilişkin beklentilerde, doğa bilimlerinin nasıl belirleyici bir söyleme kaynaklık ettiklerini göstermesi bakımından ilginç veriler sunmaktadır. Bu yazıda bu roman, dönemin tarihsel-sosyolojik ve söylemsel analizi için bir örnek metin olarak ele alınmıştır.
