sinecine: Journal of Film Studies aims to bring together different disciplines around the common ground of cinema and to create a publication platform open to academic research, discussion, and critique within the fields of social sciences, arts, and the humanities. Within this framework, the journal publishes studies covering a broad perspective ranging from national cinema to Hollywood, from art cinema to popular cinema, from classical cinema to contemporary cinema; and addressing topics such as the political economy of cinema, film history, theoretical approaches, psychoanalytic and feminist readings, reception studies, genre studies, auteur cinema, video, new media, and diverse film forms.
While sinecine is open to a wide range of topics, it adopts compliance with academic standards as a fundamental principle for publication. Submissions must be original; manuscripts that have been previously published, accepted for publication elsewhere, or translations of such works are not considered for evaluation.
Authors may submit their manuscripts to the journal by uploading them to the system via https://dergipark.org.tr/en/pub/sinecine. sinecine accepts article submissions on a continuous basis throughout the year and publishes manuscripts whose evaluation process has been completed in sequence in accordance with its publication plan. Submissions may be made at any time of the year without waiting for a specific call or submission period.
Prior to submission, authors are expected to carefully review the Submission and Writing Guidelines and to ensure that their manuscripts comply with the journal’s citation and formatting requirements.
SUBMISSION AND WRITING GUIDELINES
sinecine: Journal of Film Studies publishes articles in Turkish and English. In addition to research articles evaluated by anonymous reviewers, the journal may also include translated articles selected or commissioned by the editor or the Editorial Board. Furthermore, shorter texts evaluated in the Değini section—such as current film reviews, book reviews, and conference or festival reports—with a length of 2,000–4,000 words are also published.
Manuscripts (including abstract, notes and references) must not exceed 10,000 words (8,000 words is ideal). Explanatory notes should be numbered within the text and placed as footnotes at the bottom of the relevant page. The manuscript must include a Turkish and an English abstract of approximately 200 words, along with five keywords.
The text must be prepared as a Word file (.doc or .docx) and submitted via the DergiPark system. Manuscripts should be written in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1.5 line spacing; footnotes should be formatted in 10-point font with single line spacing. Both the main text and footnotes should be left-aligned. If subheadings are used, they should appear on a separate line, be bolded, and have the first letters of each word capitalized. The file also includes the Acknowledgements, Research Funding, and Ethics Committee Approval and Informed Consent sections to be added at the end of the main text.
At the initial submission stage, in addition to the anonymized manuscript file (from which the author’s name and any information that may reveal the author’s identity within the text have been removed), a separate Author Information file must be uploaded. This file should include the article title, the author’s name, institutional affiliation, a short biography, full address, and email address.
With regard to Turkish writing rules, sinecine follows the Ana Yazım Kılavuzu (Main Writing Guidelines) prepared under the chairmanship of Ömer Asım Aksoy. The APA system is used for citation and formatting. For details, the 7th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association should be consulted.
Manuscripts that comply with the journal’s submission, citation, and formatting rules, that fall within the scope of the journal, and that meet its academic expectations are evaluated by anonymous reviewers who are experts in the relevant field. Accepted articles are published according to the order of submission. Requests to expedite the publication process for purposes such as job applications or academic promotion cannot be accommodated. However, the editors may issue a letter confirming that a manuscript has been accepted and is in the publication queue.
Authors whose manuscripts receive a revision request at the initial evaluation stage are advised to submit a revised version of their text along with a detailed revision report to be forwarded to the reviewers.
Submitted works must not have been previously published, must not be under consideration by another journal, and must not be submitted simultaneously to another journal while under evaluation at sinecine. If simultaneous submission is detected, the manuscript will be removed from the evaluation process.
Plagiarism detection software is used to ensure the originality of published works. However, the final decision regarding plagiarism is made by the Editorial Board in line with the opinions of expert reviewers. If violations of academic and ethical requirements—such as permissions, copyright, or (where required) ethics committee approval—are identified, the manuscript may be rejected or withdrawn at any stage of the evaluation process. In addition, in order to maintain author diversity, care is taken to avoid publishing articles by the same author or authors at short intervals.
As of the Spring 2019 (Vol. 10, No. 1) issue, sinecine: Journal of Film Studies does not publish articles derived from theses in which the thesis supervisor is listed as a co-author. Articles derived from theses are considered for evaluation only when submitted under the sole authorship of the thesis author.
In order to ensure the proper functioning of international indexing processes, cited sources, author names, and institutional information must be published using the Roman (Latin) alphabet. For sources written in an alphabet other than the Latin alphabet, it is mandatory to provide translations of the original titles into the language of the article in addition to the original titles. The use of only Chinese (or another non-Latin alphabet) without any explanation is not sufficient.
USE OF VISUAL MATERIALS IN ARTICLES
The use of visual materials in articles is supported only in cases where the visuals constitute a direct object of analysis. The inclusion of images, screenshots, or visuals such as film posters that represent the films, videos, video games, or other media examples discussed—without being directly related to the text and without being subjected to analytical examination—is not recommended, as this may lead to violations of the fair use principle for copyrighted works and is not compatible with academic textual structure.
sinecine supports the use of a maximum of six visuals per published research article. As a general publication policy, sinecine does not publish figures consisting of multiple images (for example, figures in which two or more frames or screenshots are presented side by side as a single image). However, limited exceptions may be made for interface images whose dimensions do not conform to standard media figures (such as mobile device screenshots), as well as for visuals that are original, creative, or transformative in nature.
In cases where visual materials are included and the principle of fair use does not apply, obtaining publication permissions is the responsibility of the authors. Although it is not mandatory to submit these permissions at the submission stage, after the peer-review process has been completed and immediately following the official notification by sinecine regarding the decision to publish an article, authors are obliged to document the publication permissions for the visuals.
Visuals should be at least 1,500 pixels in width or height (or at least 7–10 centimeters in size when saved at 300 dpi) and must have a minimum resolution of 250–300 dpi. Uncompressed TIFF file format is preferred; however, other common formats are also acceptable. It is recommended that visuals be saved without compression.
REFERENCING AND FORMATTING
When preparing the reference list in accordance with the APA style, only the first letter of article and book titles should be capitalized; all other words should be written in lowercase.
In Turkish reference lists, no additional phrases are used for chapters in edited volumes.
In Turkish, dates that include both the day and the month should be written with the day first, followed by the month.
Concepts and sources written in languages that do not use the Latin alphabet should be presented, at their first occurrence in the text and in the reference list, together with their Latin transliteration and their translation into the language of the article, enclosed in square brackets.
Film titles should be italicized in accordance with APA rules. However, at the first mention, the original title of the film should be given first, followed by its Turkish title in parentheses, for example: Shadows (Gölgeler). Thereafter, throughout the text, the film should be referred to consistently either by its title in the language of the article or by its original title.
See
Sources recommended for further reading should be indicated by means of footnotes.
1 See (Nichols, 2017).
If more than one source is recommended:
3 For detailed information on this subject, see (Özön, 1962; Scognamillo, 2013; Gomery, 1985).
If page numbers are to be indicated:
4 For detailed information on this subject, see (Özön, 1962, p. 218; Scognamillo, 1998, p. 434; Gomery, 1985, pp. 153–186).
sinecine follows the APA 7th edition for citation and formatting.
The basic referencing and writing rules applied in sinecine and compliant with APA 7th Edition are as follows:
IN-TEXT CITATIONS
Within the text, the titles of all films, books, journals, newspapers, and television programs should be italicized. When a film title is mentioned for the first time and the director’s name does not appear in the sentence, the director’s name should be given in parentheses first, followed by the year of release.
Example: Monster (Canavar, Patty Jenkins, 2003), Aşk Mabudesi (Nejat Saydam, 1968).
If necessary, the following information may also be included:
The Big Sleep (Büyük Uyku, Howard Hawks, Warner Bros., USA, 1945).
If a general reference is made to a work as a whole, it is sufficient to provide the author’s surname and the year of publication, for example: (Gürbilek, 2007).
If a direct quotation is taken from a specific page or the referenced ideas derive from a particular section, the citation should include the page number, as follows:
(Gürbilek, 2007, p. 39).
When a work has three to five authors, all authors’ names should be listed in the first citation (Süalp, Kanbur, & Algan, 2008); in subsequent citations, it is sufficient to use only the first author’s surname followed by et al.: (Süalp, Kanbur ve Algan, 2008).
If a work has six or more authors, only the first author’s surname followed by et al. should be used even in the first citation, for example: (Abisel et al., 2005).
All personal communications conducted via email, telephone, or face-to-face interviews should be cited in the text and also included in the reference list.
Example: Yeşim Ustaoğlu (personal communication, May 6, 2005) or (Yeşim Ustaoğlu, personal communication, May 6, 2005).
If the original publication date of classical sources is known, they are cited as in the following example: (Freud, 1930/1998). If the primary source cited in the text has not been read by the author and has been accessed through another author via one of the sources used (i.e., if a secondary source is used), it should be cited as follows:
(cited in Büker, 2007, p. 15) or (Žižek, cited in Arslan, 2009, p. 30).
Direct quotations longer than 40 words should be formatted as block quotations, indented 0.5 cm from the left margin, written in 10-point font, single-spaced, and without quotation marks. When words or sentences are omitted from a direct quotation taken from the original source, the omission should be indicated with an ellipsis enclosed in square brackets […].
Direct quotations shorter than 40 words should be enclosed in double quotation marks. If a word or phrase within a quoted passage needs to be emphasized using quotation marks, single quotation marks should be used. Apart from this usage, single quotation marks should not be used in the text.
IN THE REFERENCE LIST
All sources—books, journals, online materials, etc.—are listed alphabetically in the reference list without distinction by type. If authors share the same surname, entries are ordered alphabetically by the initial of the first name. If the initials are also identical, the entries should be formatted as in the following example:
Thompson, J. [Janet]. (2008).
Thompson, J. [Julia]. (2003).
If an author has multiple works published in the same year, they should be distinguished both in the text and in the reference list as follows:
(Akbulut, 2009a) and (Akbulut, 2009b).
If an author has multiple works listed in the reference list, they should be ordered chronologically from oldest to most recent. For sources without a publication date, the abbreviation n.d. (no date) is used. If the original publication dates of classical works (such as those by Marx or Freud) are known, this information should be indicated at the end of the reference, for example: (Original work published in 1846).
Terms such as “publisher,” “publications,” or “books” should not be included at the end of publisher names.
Example: Dipnot or Routledge.
