<p>Replication is a method used in industrial foam-ceramic production, based on immersing a porous polymer sponge into ceramic slip so that the sponge fully absorbs the material, followed by high-temperature firing in which the sponge burns out and the remaining ceramic structure sinters. While this process is primarily employed in industry for functional purposes such as thermal and acoustic insulation, it has recently become increasingly visible in contemporary ceramic art as an alternative forming approach. However, artistic applications are often discussed under different headings in the literature—such as “forming by coating/pouring/immersing pre-shaped organic materials”—and this terminological diversity obscures the method’s technical core, process logic, and conceptual boundaries, producing a classification ambiguity. This article argues that these practices, which structurally correspond to the industrial process, are more consistently defined as forming through replication grounded in a logic of “formal/textural transfer.” Through a comparative examination of the industrial production scheme and contemporary artistic applications, the study discusses the decisive parameters that define the method, including the burn-out of the carrier material, the formation of a porous structure, the transfer of surface/texture, and the re-production of form. In doing so, it aims to foreground replication not merely as a technical procedure, but as a material strategy of “trace extraction” and “form transfer” within contemporary ceramic practice.</p></trans-abstract>
