Abstract

The Roman Amphorae Found in Phocaea Mosaics Sector

            12 amphora fragments were found in the mosaic area sector in the excavation conducted on the ancient city of Phocaea, which is under the modern settlement within the borders of Foça district in İzmir province. We found out that these fragments belong to 10 different amphorae. These amphorae were typologically divided into five groups. Based on the similar examples, Amphorae found in ​Phocaea Mosaics Sector are dated from the end of the 1st century BC to the 4th century AD. The close clay resemblance of samples of Aegean Local Amphorae and Kapitän II groups with Phocaea red slip ware is noteworthy. This is quite important since it indicates that the city also deals with amphora production. The study also examined the possible trade network we found out that the city was active especially in the Aegean-Mediterranean line.

PHOKAIA MOZAİKLER ALANI’NDA ELE GEÇEN ROMA DÖNEMİ AMPHORALARI

Phokaia Mozaikler
Alanı’nda Ele Geçen Roma Dönemi Amphoraları

 

İzmir ili Foça ilçesi sınırları içerinde
modern yerleşmenin altında kalan Phokaia antik kenti üzerine yürütülen
çalışmalarda, mozaikli alan sektöründe
12 adet amphora parçası ele geçmiştir. Bu parçaların incelemelerimiz sonucunda
10 farklı amphoraya ait olduğu anlaşıldı. Bu amphoralar ise tipolojik olarak
beş farklı grup altında ayrıldı. Tüm bu eserler irdelendiğinde Phokaia
Mozaikler alanında bulunmuş olan amphoraların benzer örneklerden hareketle MÖ
1. yüzyıl sonları - MS. 4. aralığına tarihlendiği görülür. İrdelenen eserlerden
özellikle Ege Yerel Amphoraları ve Kapitän II gruplarına dâhil olan örneklerin
Phokaia kırmızı astarlı seramikleri ile olan yakın kil benzerliği dikkat
çekicidir. Bu durum kentin amphora üretimiyle de uğraştığını göstermesi
açısından kayda değerdir. Çalışmada olası ticaret ağı da irdelenmiş ve kentin
özellikle Ege-Akdeniz hattında etkin olduğu gözlenmiştir.
