CHARACTERIZATION OF EDIBLE CANNA (CANNA EDULIS KER) STARCH-BASED BIOCOMPOSITES REINFORCED WITH SORGHUM (SORGHUM BICOLOR (L.) MOENCH) STALKS FIBER
Abstract
This study investigates biocomposites composed of edible canna starch (CS) as a matrix material with the addition of sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) stalk fiber (SF) as a reinforcing agent. The results reveal that systematically increasing the concentration of alkali-treated SF from 0 to 10wt.% significantly enhanced both tensile strength and Young's modulus of the biocomposite films, indicating the effective stress transmission between the matrix and the fibers. Alkali treatment of SF enhanced cellulose exposure by removing hemicellulose, lignin, and contaminants, such as wax and oils, leading to increased hydrophilicity due to hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. This enhanced hydrophilicity improved the compatibility between the treated SF and CS, resulting in biocomposite films with superior water resistance capacity. The biocomposites exhibit robust intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the fibers and the matrix, mostly attributed to the compatibility and similarity of their chemical structure. Overall, the resulting biocomposite films exhibit favorable mechanical, physical, and water resistance properties. In conclusion, this study underscores the potential of utilizing edible canna starch reinforced with sorghum fiber in packaging applications. Future studies can deeply explore the impact of fiber loadings on the physical and mechanical properties of biocomposite films, as it is crucial to further develop biopackaging materials.
