Charles S. Peirce’ün Pragmatik Maksimi Bize Ne Söyler, Ne Söylemez?

Year 2025, Issue: 24, 347 - 359, 01.12.2025
https://doi.org/10.55256/temasa.1793493

Abstract

What Does Charles S. Peirce’s Pragmatic Maxim Tell Us, and What Does It Not?

Year 2025, Issue: 24, 347 - 359, 01.12.2025
https://doi.org/10.55256/temasa.1793493

Abstract

It is observed that the pragmatic maxim, formulated by Charles S. Peirce and regarded as the fundamental principle of pragmatism, is widely misunderstood in four respects. The aim of this study is to identify the ambiguities concerning the pragmatic maxim and to contribute to its correct understanding in the said respects. As a first step toward addressing these ambiguities, Peirce’s distinction between meaning and clarity will be examined. Secondly, an answer will be provided to the question of where meaning lies according to Peirce. Thirdly, it will be examined what Peirce means by ‘effects of the object’ and ‘experiment,’ and, in connection with this, the question of what kinds of sentences play a role in clarifying an idea will be addressed. Finally, it will be demonstrated that Peirce did not present the pragmatic maxim as a principle providing a criterion of truth, and the question of what function the maxim serves will be addressed. The first challenge encountered in any study on pragmatism is to properly grasp Peirce’s pragmatic maxim. Overcoming this challenge is a prerequisite for evaluating and criticizing pragmatism in a sound manner. For this reason, the main motivation of this study is to pave the way for a sound discussion on pragmatism by presenting an assessment of the pragmatic maxim.
