Types of Exercises Offered in Third Age Universities and Their Benefits on the Health of Elderly Individuals

Abstract

With the increasing elderly population worldwide, the concept of quality aging or active aging among older individuals is gaining more prominence. Consequently, third age universities have been established to support the social, physical, and psychological development of the elderly. It is crucial not only for individuals who engage in regular exercise but also for those participating in third age universities to understand the types of exercises available and the health benefits associated with them. Therefore, this study aims to highlight the types of exercises offered in third age universities and the health benefits of these exercises for elderly individuals. According to relevant literature reviews, exercise programs such as Otago, Tai Chi Chuan, Resistance, Flexibility, and Endurance exercises can be implemented for individuals participating in third age universities. These exercise programs, when implemented, significantly enhance the balance and muscle strength of elderly individuals, thereby reducing the risk of falls. They also improve cardiovascular and respiratory functions, thus enhancing the overall physical capacity of elderly individuals and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, these exercises support metabolic health and strengthen the immune system.

Üçüncü Yaş Üniversitelerinde Sunulan Egzersiz Çeşitleri ve Yaşlı Bireylerin Sağlığına Faydaları

Abstract

Dünya genelinde yaşlı nüfusun artmasıyla birlikte yaşlı bireylerin kaliteli yaşlanma veya aktif yaşlanma durumları giderek daha fazla gündeme gelmektedir. Bu nedenle yaşlıların sosyal, fiziksel ve psikolojik gelişimlerini desteklemek amacıyla üçüncü yaş üniversiteleri kurulmaya başlanmıştır. Düzenli egzersiz yapan bireyler kadar üçüncü yaş üniversitelerine katılım sağlayan bireylerin de egzersiz çeşitlikleri ve bu egzersizlerin sağlığa faydalarının bilinmesi oldukça önemlidir. Buna göre bu çalışma üçüncü yaş üniversitelerinde sunulan egzersiz çeşitleri ve uygulanan egzersizlerin yaşlı bireylerin sağlığına faydalarını ortaya koymak amacıyla yapılmıştır. İlgili literatür değerlendirmelerine göre üçüncü yaş üniversitelerine katılan bireyler için Otago, Tai Chi Chuan, Direnç, Esnekli ve Dayanıklılık egzersizleri gibi egzersiz programları uygulanabilir. Uygulanan bu egzersiz programları yaşlı bireylerin denge ve kas kuvvetini artırarak düşme riskini önemli ölçüde azaltmakta, kardiyovasküler ve solunum fonksiyonlarını iyileştirerek yaşlı bireylerin genel fiziksel kapasitelerini artırmakta ve kronik hastalıkların riskini azaltmaktadır. Ayrıca uygulanan bu egzersizler metabolik sağlığı destekleyerek bağışıklık sistemini güçlendirmektedir.
