The Effects of Omega 3 Fatty Acids on the Healing of Colonic Anastomosis

Year 2009, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 15 - 20, 19.03.2009

Abstract

The aim of this study is to study the effects of omega 3 fatty acids on colonic anastomosis healing. Four groups that include 6 Wistar albino rats (200-250 g) each were made. In Group I, anastomosis of the colon was made. On the postoperative third day, the level of perianastomotic tissue hydroxiprolin, and anastomosis bursting pressure was recorded. To Group II, 50 mg/kg/days omega 3 fatty acids were given orally for six days. At the end of the third day, colonic anastomosis was made to the rats and the values of the same parameters were recorded. In Group III, the values of the same parameters were investigated seven days after the colonic anastomosis operation. To Group IV, 50 mg/kg/days omega 3 fatty were given orally for ten days. At the end of the third day, colonic anastomosis was made to the rats and the values of the same parameters were recorded on the postoperative seventh day. Even though the bursting pressure of Group II was found to be higher than that of Group I, it was not statistically significant (p> 0.05). The bursting pressure of Group IV was found to be significantly higher than that of Group III (p <0.05). Although the level of perianastomotic tissue hydroxiprolin was higher than control groups in groups to which omega 3 fatty acids were given, it was not found statistically significant (p> 0.05). Since the bursting pressure of Group IV was found to be significantly higher then the other groups; it is suggested that omega 3 fatty acids make colonic anastomosis stronger when it is given longer.

Omega 3 Yağ Asitlerinin Kolon Anastomoz İyileşmesi Üzerine Etkisi (Deneysel Çalışma)

Year 2009, Volume: 3 Issue: 1, 15 - 20, 19.03.2009

Abstract

Bu çalışmada omega 3 yağ asitlerinin kolon anastomoz iyileşmesi üzerine etkilerinin araştırılması amaçlandı. Her biri 6 Wistar Albino rat (200-250 gram) içeren 4 grup oluşturuldu. I. gruba kolon anastomozu yapılarak postoperatif 3. gün anastomoz patlama basıncı, perianastomotik doku hidroksiprolin düzeyine bakıldı. II. gruba 6 gün boyunca günde 50 mg/kg omega 3 yağ asidi oral yolla verildi. 3. gün sonunda ratlara kolon anastomozu yapılarak postoperatif 3. gün aynı parametrelere bakıldı. III. gruba kolon anastomozu yapılarak postoperatif 7. gün aynı parametrelere bakıldı. IV. gruba 10 gün günde 50 mg/kg/gün omega 3 yağ asidi oral yolla verildi. 3.gün sonunda ratlara kolon anastomozu yapılarak postoperatif 7. gün aynı parametrelere bakıldı. II. grubun kolon patlama basıncı değeri I. gruptan yüksek bulunmasına rağmen istatistiksel olarak anlamlı değildi (p> 0.05). IV. grubun kolon patlama basıncı değeri III. gruptan istatiksel anlamlı yüksek bulundu (p< 0.05). Omega 3 yağ asidi verilen grupların kontrol gruplarına göre perianastomotik doku hidroksiprolin değerleri yüksek olmasına rağmen istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bulunmadı (p> 0.05). Uzun süreli omega 3 yağ asidi verilen radarda postoperatif 7. günde kolon patlama basıncının anlamlı yüksek bulunması omega 3 yağ asitinin anastomozun sağlamlığını arttırdığını düşündürmüştür.
