Humans exclude, marginalise or ignore those who are different from themselves, invisible or even unthinkable. Throughout history, those who were physically different from the ideal or had non-normative characteristics have been subjected to discriminatory behaviour and even labelled as monsters. Although the term ‘monster’ was used in pre-modern societies to describe extraordinary animals or human-animal hybrids, after modernism, it came to refer to bodies that were either the subject of medical research or exhibited in circuses for their curious appearance. The transformation of monster bodies from images of fear into powerful metaphors associated with body politics has only been possible after contemporary art. This is because the social and cultural changes experienced during the postmodernism process led to a shift in cultural codes, aiming to prevent the exclusion, othering, or erasure of the individual. Therefore, the role of the monster body image cannot be denied. This study aims to examine the meaning of the monster image in society from the past to the present, the position of individuals as monster bodies, and the role of certain concepts in body politics. Additionally, some artists and their works that use the body as a space for questioning existence are extremely important in terms of developing a practice of thinking and reveal how monster bodies have transformed.
İnsan, kendisi gibi olmayanı, görünmeyeni hatta düşünmeyeni dışlar, ötekileştirir veya yok sayar. Tarih boyunca fiziksel olarak idealden farklı, norm dışı özellikleri olanlar da toplum içinde ayrımcı davranışlara maruz kalmış hatta canavar olarak damgalanmışlardır. Her ne kadar canavar, modern öncesi toplumlarda sıra dışı hayvan veya hayvan-insan karışımı tasvirler için kullanılsa da modernizmden sonra tıbbi araştırma nesnesi olarak ya da sirklerde merak edilen görünüşlere sahip canavar bedenler olarak yerini almıştır. Canavar bedenlerin korku imgesinden beden politikalarıyla ilişkilendirilen güçlü bir metafora dönüşmesi ancak çağdaş sanattan sonra mümkün olmuştur. Çünkü postmodernizm sürecinde yaşanan toplumsal ve sosyal değişimler kültürel kodların değişmesine neden olmuş; bireyin dışlanması, ötekileştirilmesi ya da yok sayılmasının önüne geçilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Dolayısıyla canavar beden imgesinin rolü yadsınamaz. Bu araştırmada canavar imgesinin geçmişten günümüze toplum içindeki anlamı, canavar beden olarak bireylerin konumu ve belli başlı bazı kavramların beden politikalarındaki rolüne değinilmek amaçlanmıştır. Ayrıca varlığın sorgulandığı bir alan olarak bedeni kullanan bazı sanatçılar ve eserleri, düşünme pratiği geliştirmesi bakımından son derece önemlidir ve canavar bedenlerin nasıl dönüştüğünü ortaya koymaktadır.
