<p>Estimating the population of archaeological sites provides data for reconstructing migrations, life style, and social, economic and political history. The methods used for estimating population base on anthropological data, nutrition capacity, settlement dimensions, number of dwellings and average members of nuclear families, as well as the indoor area per individual. These estimations are crosschecked with archaeological, historical and ethnographic data. This paper deals with the method for estimating population according to the analysis of sleeping area of the Bronze and Iron Age settlements uncovered in the Upper Tigris region. By this method, the proportion of the indoor and outdoor areas to each other, and the function analysis of indoor areas have been analyzed. According to the number of mattresses passing to indoor sleeping areas, the number of individuals that can sleep there has been estimated. The estimation bases on the dimensions of currently used mattresses in rural Anatolia, and the number of individuals that can sleep in them. The population of rural farming communities living in single storey houses differ with those living in double storey houses. Even though the area per individual seems to be close in rural settlements used either by farming or pastoral communities, the area estimated for temporary dwellings is the half of others. Moreover, for pastoral communities, the total settlement area per individual seems to have been double of those for farming communities. Thus, for estimating the population of settlements determined during surveys, primarily the life style of the inhabitants and the concentration rate of dwellings should be analysed, in order to minimize mistakes</p></trans-abstract>
