İletişim Biliminin Oluşumunda Pozitivist Epistemolojinin Rolü

Abstract

The Role of Epistemology in The Formation of Communication Science

Abstract

Communication science is the result of positivist epistemology, which allows convergence of technical and theoretical knowledge. The basic motivation of this convergence tendency is the desire to reach an ideal social order. With the effect of revolutionary inventions in physics, the theories of thinkers, who have been trying to establish the laws of controlling human thought and behaviour since the 17th century, have become practical by means of the development in the mass media in the 20th century. The science of physics, which has been the most reliable knowledge of positivist epistemology since the 17th century, has greatly contributed to the practice of theory. Physics influenced the formation of many social sciences disciplines as well as the formation of communication science. Dealing with social sciences disciplines in a relational way in the early 20th century, communication science focuses on the problematic of realizing rather than explaining social change. The most basic criticism raised against communication science about scientific legitimacy is that it does not have a basic epistemology. Interestingly, positivist epistemology, which has influenced the formation of communication science, is the subject of scientific legitimacy debates of the discipline. There are two main issues leading this discussion: 1) One is the effort to place the communication discipline on a positivist basis within social sciences. 2) The second is the fallacy of interpreting natural sciences philosophically. In this study, the role of positivist epistemology, which realizes the interaction between natural sciences and social sciences in the formation of communication science, will be investigated by literature review method. In this context, the analysis will seek potential answers regarding the debate on the scientific legitimacy of communication science.
