<p>Aim: The purpose of this study is to reveal the definition of health literacy, its dimensions, its effects on the health system and the individual, and to examine the role of universities in the development of health literacy.Method: This study, conducted through a literature review, is based on findings obtained from current statistical data and academic sources regarding health literacy levels in Turkey, Europe and the USA. In addition, health literacy programs, online information systems and consultancy services implemented in universities were examined. Results: Research shows that a significant portion of societies have limited or insufficient health literacy levels. Health literacy courses, information activities and digital resources conducted in universities significantly increase the knowledge and awareness levels of students. In addition, low health literacy has negative effects on individual health outcomes and brings economic burden to the health system. Conclusions: Health literacy is not only an individual competence; it is a multi-stakeholder strategic priority that directly affects public health. While universities play a key role in this process; It is of great importance that other stakeholders such as health institutions, educational institutions, local governments and the media work in coordination.</p></trans-abstract>
