Uluslararası İlişkiler Dergisi

The journal ofInternational Relations (Uluslararasi Iliskiler), which is published by the International Relations Council of Turkey(IRCT) since 2004, is a refereed academic journal with printed and on-line versions that includes articles on international relations, political history, international law, security studies, diplomacy and international political economy. It also includes a book-review section.

Uluslararasi Iliskiler aims at developing academic perspectives in International Relations and related fields. Whileit had prioritized contributing to International Relations literatüre in Turkish, it has in time moved to the idea of contributing to the global International Relations litarature through engaging theoretical and/or regional works originated in Turkey as well as globally.

The journal ofInternational Relations (Uluslararasi Iliskiler), which is published by the International Relations Council of Turkey(IRCT) since 2004, is a refereed academic journal with printed and on-line versions that includes articles on international relations, political history, international law, security studies, diplomacy and international political economy. It also includes a book-review section.

International Relations uses in-text author-date system for references. All manuscripts submitted to the journal should strictly follow the guidelines below. Please refer to the guidelines below for full details and examples. The change of reference system will not affect the journal's article word limit, which will remain as 8000 words, including the abstract, key words and references.

1. The manuscripts should be written with Times News Roman font and 1,5 space in one of the Word programs. 12 punto for the main text and 10 punto for the footnotes should be used.

2. Maximum two-level subtitle system should be used in the manuscripts. The first subtitle should be bold, the second should be bold and italic. The subtitles should not be numbered.

3. The quotations within the text should be given in double quotation marks; the quotations longer than 4 lines should be placed in a new paragraph with the entire quote indented ½ inch from the left margin and should have one-spacing. The quotation should be given within a single quotation mark.

4. Words used from different languages other than the manuscripts’ language should be written in italic and translation to Turkish or English as appropriate should be given in parentheses at its first use. Concepts and terminology that Turkish versions are not very well known or used differently by different scholars, should include it’s original language versions within parentheses. The words that need to be highlighted within the quotations should be written in italic and should be stated in a footnote that the emphasis belongs to the author.

5. The words that need to be highlighted within the text should not be written in italic, bold, or underlined, but should be written within a single quotation mark.

6. The sources used while preparing the article should be cited according to the Reference Guidelines provided below.

International Relations / Uluslararası İlişkiler prefers using the in-text author-date system for manuscripts submitted to the journal. Prospective authors should refer to the following examples when preparing their manuscripts. For cases not covered below, please check http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/contents.html.

In Text Citation
Sources are to be cited in the text in parentheses, with the author's last name, the date of publication of the work cited, and a page number if a specific page(s) is cited. There is no need for punctuation between the author and the date.

For works by two or three authors, all names should be included. If there are more than three authors, only the last name of the first author is used, followed by ‘et al.’

If the last name of the author appears in the text, it is not necessary to repeat it in the parenthetical citation.
Its theory and method were developed further by Alexander George (1969) and Stephen Walker (1983).

Two or more references in a single parenthetical citation are separated by semicolons and are given in chronological order.

If a reference list contains two or more works published in the same year by the same author(s), the letters a, b, etc., must be used in both the text and the reference list.

Authors can use footnotes to provide additional or supplementary information about a passage in the text. However, the number of footnotes in the manuscript should be limited to minimum.
References
Full bibliographical information, arranged alphabetically, should be given in the references section (list of sources used) at the end of the text.

The full names of the authors should be used in the references. The surname first and then the first name separated with coma.

Electronic Sources
The first letter of the protocol (h in http) should not be capitalized. The capitalization of the remaining components varies, as some URLs are case sensitive, they should not be edited for style. Adding angle brackets (i.e., < >) at either end of the address should be avoided unless it is part of the address.

If there is no author for electronic resources, the owner of the site may stand in for the author. Descriptive phrases can be used for content on very informal sites where titles may be missing.

If a source does not have an author, 'Anonymous' is used in place of the author's name in a reference list. However, the use of ‘Anonymous’ should generally be avoided.

PUBLICATION ETHICS

International Relations is committed to maintain the highest academic and ethical standards in line with the principles of the Committee of Publication Ethics (COPE).

The Journal ensures an unbiased consideration for each work submitted. This means each manuscript is judged on its merits without regard race, religion, nationality, sex, political view, seniority, or institutional affiliation of the author(s).

The Editorial Board and the editors of the Journal are obliged to ensure the confidentiality of the submitted works until they are published, except in the case of suspicion of double submission or plagiarism. In cases where the Editorial Board decide not to publish a material, it is the responsibility of the editors and the Editorial Board that no information will be disseminated to any person other than the author(s) and the manuscript will not be used by the Journal for other purposes.

Studies that violate the academic and legal criteria such as double submission, plagiarism and/or violation of copyright laws are not evaluated. If and when such violations are determined during the evaluation period, the review process is immediately stopped and the study is returned to the author(s).

The Journal adheres to double blind review process. In cases where the referee evaluations are contradictory or inadequate, the editors and/or the Editorial Board may ask for additional review(s).

The main task of the reviewers is to contribute to the editors’ decision on publishing a submitted manuscript. The reviewers are obliged to ensure the confidentiality of the submitted works during the evaluation, and they must not use the information obtained through peer review process for personal interest. The reviewers should not consider a manuscript in which they have conflict of interest with any of the authors, companies, or institutions connected to the papers. The reviewers should objectively and critically evaluate the work, and must avoid personal comments on the author(s).

The publication decision on submitted works are collectively taken by the Editorial Board, the Managing and Associate Editors, and the Editor-in-Chief based on the reviewer’s reports. The final decision for publishing the manuscripts that have succeeded in all evaluation processes rests with the Editorial Board of the Journal. The Journal does not have to provide a reason to the authors whose manuscripts are not published.

All kinds of research carried out with qualitative or quantitative approaches that require data collection from participants using survey, interview, focus group work, observation, experiment, interview techniques, etc., and retrospective studies in accordance with the Law on the Protection of Personal Data, require permission from the ethics committee.

It is also necessary to state in the research paper that “Informed Consent Form” has been obtained in case reports, to take and state permissions from the copyright owners of formulations, surveys, photographs, etc., and to indicate that copyright regulations for the thought pieces and works of art have been complied with.

Authors are allowed to re-submit their rejected manuscripts after revising them in accordance with reviewers’ reports. The manuscripts that are judged by the Editorial Board to be not adjusted enough to address the concerns raised by the reviewer(s) are rejected. Others are accepted for the evaluation process as a new submission.

International Relations is an open access journal, which means it is free to access all manuscripts online as soon as they are published. There are no article publishing charges for the submitted works.

PUBLUCATION GUIDELINES

1. Articles submitted to the journal of Uluslararası İlişkiler (International Relations) should be original contributions that would bring about a new perspective to the studied topic, and should not be published previously or under consideration for any other publication at the same time.

2. If a submitted article is selected for publication, it’s copyright will be transferred to the International Relations Council of Turkey. Published papers can be cited by providing appropriate bibliographical information. Permissions for re-publishing any article in full-text must be sought from the Journal.

3. The submitted manuscripts can be published only after at least two positive reports by the reviewers and decisions taken by the responsible Associate Editor as well as the Editorial Board. The legal and academic responsibilities for published material belong to the author(s) for their publications. Statements of opinion appearing in the articles are solely those of the authors and do not imply endorsement by the Journal.

4. Submissions whether published or not are not returned.

5. Only the articles and book reviews submitted via filling the form on the web page of the Journal (http://www.uidergisi.com.tr/?page_id=670) are taken into consideration. The manuscripts that are directly sent to the Editors and/or to the Editorial Board members are not taken into consideration.

6. Authors are requested to read and approve the copyright contract before submitting their manuscripts.

7. Articles should be between 6000 and 8000 words including the footnotes, Turkish and English abstracts, and the bibliography. The manuscripts that are above or below the word limit will be returned to the author(s) without any evaluation.

8. Book reviews should not exceed 1.200 words. Literature reviews should be between 3.000 and 5.000 words. The manuscripts that are above or below 10% of the word limits are returned to the author(s) without any evaluation. Please find the details in the book review guidelines.

9. The articles should include Turkish and English abstracts and keywords. Each abstract should be approximately 100 words. Turkish and English keywords should not exceed words each.

10. All the articles published in the Journal should indicate whether the approval of an ethics committee and/or legal/special permission is needed. If it is necessary to obtain such permits, the institution, date, and decision or serial number of the permission should be clearly stated.
