USE OF HEMATITE MINERAL AS FILLER IN ASPHALT CONCRETE

Abstract

In order to increase the strength of bituminous hot mixes (HMA) under heavy axle loads and to reduce their high costs, the search for an alternative to the pavement material is increasing day by day. In this study, the usability of hematite mineral as filler material in HMA was investigated. For this purpose, the optimum bitumen amount (OBA) was calculated by preparing mixtures with limestone aggregate at the rates of 3.5%, 4%, 4.5%, 5%, 5.5% and 6%. OBA was determined by applying the same procedure for HMA, which is formed by replacing limestone filler with hematite. In the continuation of the study, HMA samples containing both limestone filler material and hematite filler material were prepared with their own OBA values, and their performance properties were evaluated by Marshall stability (MS) test. Practical specific gravity value (Dp), void volume value (Vh), voids in mineral aggregate (VMA), voids filled with bitumen (Vf), MS and flow values of samples containing hematite filler material were compared with the sample containing limestone filler and the specification limit values and as a result, it was concluded that hematite can be used as filler material in HMA.

HEMATİT MİNERALİNİN ASFALT BETONDA FİLLER OLARAK KULLANIMI

Abstract

Bitümlü sıcak karışımların (BSK) ağır dingil yükleri altındaki dayanımını artırmak aynı zamanda yüksek maliyetini düşürebilmek için kaplama malzemesine alternatif arayışı her geçen gün artmaktadır. Bu çalışmada, hematit mineralinin BSK’da filler malzemesi olarak kullanılabilirliği araştırılmıştır. Bu amaçla %3.5, %4, %4.5, %5, %5.5 ve %6 oranlarında kireçtaşı agrega ile karışımlar hazırlanarak optimum bitüm miktarı (OBM) hesaplanmıştır. Kireçtaşı fillerin hematit ile yer değiştirilmesiyle oluşan BSK için de aynı prosedür uygulanarak OBM belirlenmiştir. Çalışmanın devamında hem kireçtaşı filler içeren BSK hem de hematit filler içeren BSK numuneleri kendi OBM değerleriyle hazırlanmış, Marshall stabilite (MS) deneyi ile performans özellikleri değerlendirilmiştir. Hematit filler içeren numunelerin pratik özgül ağırlık değeri (Dp), boşluk yüzdesi (Vh), agregalar arası boşluk yüzdesi (VMA), bitümle dolu boşluk yüzdesi (Vf), MS ve akma değeri kireçtaşı filler içeren numuneyle ve şartname sınır değerleri ile karşılaştırılmış ve hematitin BSK’da filler malzeme olarak kullanılabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.
