XIX. yüzyılda Sanayi Devrimi sonrasında büyüyen ekonomileri yakalamak için çaba gösteren Osmanlı Devleti’nde ilk maden arama faaliyetleri başlatılmıştır. Söz konusu dönemde petrol ve kömüre son derece önem veren Osmanlı Devleti, bu kaynakları verimli kullanabilmek adına çeşitli imtiyazlar dağıtmıştır. Maden imtiyazlarının yerli ve yabancı müteşebbislerle paylaşılmasının temel sebebi Osmanlı Devleti’nin bilgi, teknoloji ve sermaye eksikliğinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Bu doğrultuda özellikle Sultan II. Abdülhamid döneminde başlatılan maden arama çalışmaları Trakya genelinde Şarköy, Mürefte ve Gaziköy gibi bölgelerde devam ettirilmiştir. Bu çalışmada ilgili bölgelerdeki petrol ile kömür arama ve çıkarma işlemleri konu edinilmekle beraber arşiv belgeleri ışığında incelenmeye ve değerlendirilmeye çalışılacaktır.
The first mineral exploration activities were started in the Ottoman Empire, which strived to catch up with the growing economies after the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century. The Ottoman Empire, which attached great importance to oil and coal in the said period, distributed privileges in order to use these resources efficiently. The main reason for sharing mining concessions with local and foreign entrepreneurs is the lack of knowledge, technology and capital of the Ottoman Empire. In this direction, especially Sultan II. The mineral exploration works initiated during the reign of Abdülhamid continued in regions such as Şarköy, Mürefte and Gaziköy throughout Thrace. In this study, petroleum and coal exploration and extraction processes in the relevant regions will be discussed and will be examined and evaluated in the light of archival documents.
