The Free Republican Party is one of the important turning points of the single-party era. This political party, which was founded by President Gazi Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk) to his close friend Fethi (Okyar) Bey, the Ambassador to Paris, was initially conceived as an opposition party that could control the government in the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, but in a short period of time, it gained the support of the masses of the people. This support became tangible as the masses who complained about the government’s practices and the economy started to flow to this party in a short period of time. Participating in the 1930 Municipal Elections, this party put the ruling Republican People’s Party, the Republican People’s Party, in a very difficult situation in the first and only election of the one-party era based on open competition, and a view emerged that caused the regime to be seen in danger for the government. In this environment, the Free Republican Party was dissolved by its founder Fethi Bey on November 17, 1930, after Gazi declared his side in favor of the Republican People’s Party, and thus the three-month multi-party experience of the single party regime came to an end. In the historiography, the Free Republican Party experience was officially discussed for the first time in the 1931 High School History Textbook. In the academic literature, evaluations on the Free Republican Party first began in the post-1945-50 period when Türkiye transitioned to multi-party life. In the nearly seventy years that have passed until today, the Free Republican Party has been the subject of numerous books, theses, articles and periodicals, and many evaluations have been made about it. However, the literature on the Free Republican Party has not been brought together as a whole. This article brings together books, theses, articles and other publications on the Free Republican Party and presents them to the attention of researchers. Examining the existing literature on this subject together is important in terms of determining the point reached and the deficiencies in the historiography of the Free Republican Party.
Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası, tek parti döneminin önemli dönüm noktalarından biridir. Cumhurbaşkanı Gazi Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk) tarafından yakın dostu Paris Büyükelçisi Fethi (Okyar) Bey’e kurdurulan bu siyasi parti, ilk başta Türkiye Büyük Millet Meclisi’nde hükümeti denetleyebilecek bir muhalefet partisi olarak düşünülürken, kısa bir süre içerisinde geniş halk kitlelerinin desteğini almıştır. Bu destek, hükümetin uygulamalarından ve ekonomiden şikayetçi olan kitlelerin kısa sürede bu partiye akmasıyla somut bir hal almaya başlamıştır. 1930 Belediye Seçimleri’ne de katılan bu parti, tek parti döneminin açık bir rekabete dayalı ilk ve tek seçiminde iktidar partisi olan Cumhuriyet Halk Fırkası’nı çok zor durumda bırakmış ve iktidar açısından rejimin tehlikede görülmesine neden olacak ölçüde bir manzara ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu ortam içerisinde Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası, Gazi’nin de tarafını Cumhuriyet Halk Fırkası’ndan yana olacak şekilde açık etmesinin ardından, kurucusu Fethi Bey tarafından 17 Kasım 1930 tarihinde feshedilmiş ve böylelikle tek parti döneminin üç aylık çok partili tecrübesi son bulmuştur. Tarih yazımında Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası tecrübesi, resmi olarak ilk kez 1931 tarihli Lise Tarih Ders Kitabı’nda ele alınmıştır. Akademik literatürde ise Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası üzerine yapılan değerlendirmeler ilk olarak Türkiye’nin çok partili hayata yeniden geçiş yaptığı 1945-50 sonrası dönemde başlamıştır. O tarihten bugüne kadar geçen yaklaşık yetmiş yıllık süre zarfında Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası, çok sayıda kitaba, teze, makaleye ve süreli yayına konu olmuş, hakkında çokça değerlendirme yapılmıştır. Fakat Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası’na dair literatür, bütünsel olarak bir araya getirilmemiştir. Bu makale, Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası üzerine yazılmış kitap, tez, makale ve diğer yayınları bir araya getirerek araştırmacıların ilgisine sunmaktadır. Bu konuda mevcut literatürün bir arada incelenmesi, Serbest Cumhuriyet Fırkası’na dair tarih yazımında gelinen noktayı ve eksiklikleri tespit etmek noktasında önem arz etmektedir.
