AB  - Kültür ve geleneğin görsel bir temsilcisi olan moda, toplumların ve özellikle azınlıkların konuşmasında bir araç görevi görmüştür. Azınlık bir toplum olan kadınların ve özellikle Afrikan Amerikan kadınların, toplumun geri kalanı ile iletişim kurmak ve anlaşmak için başvurdukları yöntemlerden birisi dönemin giyim alışkanlıklarıdır. Araştırmada, bu alışkanlıklar giyim modası kapsamınca ele alınmıştır. Harlem Rönesansı Döneminde, Afrikan Amerikan halkın sosyal bir araç haline gelen edebiyat; müzik ve resim ile iletişim kurduğu ve kültürel bir aktarım yaptığı bilinmektedir. Bu araştırma ile, dönemin giyim kültürü üzerinde durularak, giyim alışkanlıklarının oluşturduğu ifade biçimleri yorumlanarak sorgulanmıştır. Bu yorumlama yapılırken, literatür taramasının ardından görsel arşiv taraması yapılmıştır.Araştırma kapsamınca, Harlem Rönesansı Döneminde fotoğraflanan Afrikan Amerikan kadınlarının, farklı ortamlarda tercih ettikleri giyim biçimleri incelenmiştir. Afrikan Amerikan kadınları günlük yaşam giyim pratiklerindeki yerel öğeler ve kültürel miras üzerinde durulmuştur. Afrikan Amerikan kadınların giyim alışkanlıklarında bulunan alt metin ve mesajlar, literatür araştırmasının sonuçlarıyla birlikte ele alınmıştır. Bu metinler aranırken, geleneksel Afrikan Amerikan giyim kültürüne örnekler verilmiş ve sonrasında veri toplama yöntemi olarak seçilen görsel dokümantasyonla Harlem Rönesansı Dönemi fotoğrafları üzerinde durulmuş, böylece dönemin kadın giyimi verilerle incelenmiştir. Harlem Rönesansı ile ilgili kısıtlı Türkçe kaynak olması ve Afrikan Amerikan kültürün moda ile karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmemesi bu araştırmanın çıkış noktası olmuştur. Yapılan karşılaştırmalı incelemenin diğer araştırmacılara ışık tutması hedeflenmiştir.

N2  - Fashion, which is a visual representative of culture and tradition, has served as a tool in the speech of societies and especially minorities. Clothing habit of the period is one of a tool used by women, who are a minority society and especially African American women, to communicate with the rest of the society.In the study, these habits were discussed within the scope of clothing fashion. It is known that during the Harlem Renaissance, literature became a social tool for African American people; they communicated with music and painting thus a cultural transition is made. With this research, the clothing culture of the period was questioned by emphasizing the way of expression of clothing habits.While making this interpretation, visual archive scanning was done after the literature review. The research examined the clothing styles of African American women photographed during the Harlem Renaissance in different environments. Local items and cultural heritage in the daily life clothing practices of African American women are emphasized. Subtext and messages in the clothing habits of African American women were searched within the results of the literature research. While searching for these texts, examples of traditional African American clothing culture were given and then the photographs of the Harlem Renaissance Period were emphasized with the visual documentation chosen as the data collection method, thus the women's clothing of the period was reviwed. The starting point of this research is the limited Turkish resources about the Harlem Renaissance and the lack of a comparative analysis of African American culture with fashion. As a result of this research, it is aimed to shed light on other researchers in the comparative analysis.
