KW - Klaros KW - Kutsal Alan KW - İonia KW - Dokuztaş KW - Çatallı Haç N2 - The nine men’s morris game board and forked cross motif engraved on the lower face of the Doric capital of the Hellenistic Apollon Klarios temple must have been made in the 6th century AD, after the time when the temple was dismantled and destroyed by human hands. Therefore, the destruction of the temple is an important dating criterion for the nine men’s morris game board and the forked cross motif. Although the dating of the nine men’s morris game boards is highly controversial, the example from Klaros will make a significant contribution to this issue. At the same time, the period of use of the forked cross motif coincides with the destruction date of the temple. Both the reports of older excavations and the data of the new period excavations reveal the existence of coins and ceramics of the 5th-7th centuries AD, also represented with architecture. In this sense, it is obvious that the temple was not completely abandoned during the proclamation of Christianity as an official religion by Theodosius I in 380 AD. During this time, Klaros begins being overshadowed by the settlement and workshops arriving from Kolophon, the main city it was connected to. On the other hand, the existence of the cult of Theos Hypsistos, the prophecies made by Apollon of Klaros, and the interpretations of the Klarian prophecies in a book named Theosophia, which aimed to spread Christianity, indicate that the sanctuary began to fall under the influence of monotheistic movements. Considering the other Late Antique finds recovered from the sanctuary, the nine men’s morris game board and forked cross motif subject to this paper are important in terms of use and transformation of the sanctuary.
