AB  - Stendhal, Kırmızı ve Siyah eserinde, romanın uzun bir yol boyunca gezdirilen ayna olduğundan söz eder. Butor’un Değişmeromanı da, Léon Delmont’un iç konuşmalarını ve bilinç akışını yansıtan ayna konumundadır. Anlatıcı, okuyucuyu da romanadahil etmek için, geleneksel romandan farklı olarak, ikinci çoğul şahısla kendini ifade eder. Eserde, öğelerin tasviri alışılmışgörünümleri dışında, farklı bakış açısıyla betimlenir. Temel mekân, Paris-Roma arasındaki trenin üçüncü mevki vagonudur.Eser, her biri kendi içinde üçe ayrılan, üç temel bölümden oluşur. Tren vagonunda başlayıp biten kurgunun süresi yaklaşıkyirmi iki saatten oluşur.Modern çağın teknolojik ve bilimsel gelişmeleri, geleneksel roman kurallarının değişmesine yol açar. Marcel Proust, Alain-Robbe Grillet, Michel Butor gibi birçok yazar, Henri Bergson’un zaman felsefesinden etkilenerek, yeni anlatım yöntemlerineöncülük eder. Butor Değişme romanında, Bergson’un mekân işlevselliğini oluşturan zaman felsefesinin etkisinde kalır. Bilinçakışıyla bellekte canlanan olaylar, mekânla doğru orantılı devam eder. Her bölümün sonunda, Léon Delmont vagondançıkar, izleyen bölümün başında oturduğu yere geri döner. Bu eserde Butor, Bergson’un zaman-mekân felsefesini anlaşılırhale getirerek edebi bir anıt inşa eder. Bu amaçla yazar, zaman, mekân, bilinç, gerçeklik, geçmiş anılar ve gelecek gibikavramların farklı anlam bağlantılarını ortaya çıkarır.
