N2 - This article presents a detailed study of the French translation of Orhan Kemal's novel "ÜÇKAĞITÇI," titled "L'escroc" and translated by Jean-Louis Mattei, in the light of Mona Baker's translation strategies for cultural elements. The work in question was published in 2002 by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Türkiye. The primary reason for selecting this novel is its inclusion of numerous proper names, colloquial language, traditional expressions, idiomatic phrases, and other elements specific to the source language and culture. Therefore, this novel is highly suitable for analysis under the framework of Mona Baker's translation strategies. In this article, proverbs and idioms from the source text and their translations have been categorized into four groups: translation with similar meaning and form, translation with similar meaning but different form, translation by paraphrase, and translation by omission. Essentially, this study examines the applicability of translation strategies in a literary work. It attempts to uncover the translator's fundamental inclinations, whether source-oriented or target-oriented. It has been observed that the translator resorts to subtraction only in situations where facing difficulties, and employs translation with similar meaning and similar form, translation with similar meaning but different form, and paraphrasing.
