Method: This descriptive study was conducted with 256 patients who underwent abdominal surgical interventions at city hospital in Kayseri. Data were collected using a questionnaire and the Thirst Symptom Assessment Scale (TSAS) between August 7, 2023, and December 1, 2023. Descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, Mann-Whitney U test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and Post Hoc Tamhane T3 test were used for data analysis. Results: The average age of the participants was 50.39±14.95 years. The average total score on the TSAS was 10.71±5.73. It was found that more than half of the patients experienced moderate to severe dryness in their lips, tongue, palate, and throat, with inadequate saliva secretion and a desire to drink water. It was found that female gender, opioid administration, general anesthesia, and laparoscopic surgery were associated with higher rates of thirst symptoms, whereas patients diagnosed with hernia experienced lower rates of thirst symptoms. Conclusion: The average thirst symptom score in abdominal surgery patients was close to the mean, with more than half experiencing moderate to severe thirst symptoms. The study results indicated that gender, the administration of opioids, the type of anesthesia, and the type of surgery influenced thirst in these patients. These results suggest that identifying thirst symptoms and influencing factors during the postoperative period will be effective in managing postoperative thirst and delivering quality nursing care aimed at alleviating it.
