AB  - Öz şefkat kişinin başarısız olduğunda, hatalar ve yanlışlar yaptığında, zorlandığında eleştirel bir tutum takınmak yerine; kendisine karşı şefkatli, anlayışlı ve hoşgörülü olmasını içermektedir. Araştırma bulguları öz şefkatin bireyin iyilik haline doğrudan katkısı olduğunu göstermiştir. Sosyal hizmet mesleğinin amaçlarından birisi de müracaatçısının iyilik halini korumaktır. Ayrıca, sosyal hizmet uzmanları müracaatçı gruplarına etkili müdahalelerde bulunabilmeleri için etik olarak kendi esenliklerini korumakla yükümlüdür. Bu yükümlülüğe rağmen sosyal hizmet uzmanları tükenmişlik, ikincil travma gibi kişinin mesleki performansını ve esenliğini düşüren çeşitli psikolojik rahatsızlıklarla mücadele etmektedir.  Bu durum kendi esenliklerini korumak ile yükümlü olan sosyal hizmet uzmanları açısından etik bir sorun teşkil etmektedir. Çalışmalar öz şefkatin meslek elemanlarını bu rahatsızlıklara karşı koruduğunu göstermektedir. Ancak, öz-şefkat kavramı sosyal hizmet uzmanları tarafından müdahalelerde ve uygulamalarda yaygın olarak kullanılmamaktadır. Bunun temel sebebi sosyal hizmet eğitiminde öz şefkat kavramına yeterince yer verilmemesidir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, öz-şefkatin sosyal hizmet eğitimine dahil edilmesinin gerekliliğini vurgulamak ve öz-şefkatin müdahalelerde nasıl kullanılabileceğini tartışmaktır.
