N2 - Pregnancy represents a delicate balance between the mother and the fetus, and maternal lifestyle is critically important for the health of both individuals. This review evaluates the effects of caffeine intake during pregnancy on maternal and fetal health through a literature review. It is known that the elimination time of caffeine is prolonged during pregnancy and that it crosses the blood-brain barrier and the placenta, directly exposing the fetus to caffeine. This situation can lead to biological and metabolic changes in the fetus. The literature indicates that caffeine consumption is associated with issues such as fetal and postnatal growth retardation, low birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, delayed brain development, and neural tube defects. However, the results of studies on this subject vary due to differences in methodologies and the characteristics of studied populations. Understanding the effects of caffeine consumption during pregnancy is critically important for protecting maternal and fetal health. Based on literature findings, it is recommended that caffeine intake during pregnancy be limited to 200-300 mg/day. This review aims to comprehensively examine the effects of caffeine consumption during pregnancy on maternal health, fetal development, and maternal-fetal health. CR - (EFSA), E. F. S. A. (2015).
