Facilitated access via the Internet, anonymity, and elements of gamification have led to an increasing preference for online gambling among individuals, drawing attention to its social, financial, and psychological impacts. This study aims to examine the online gambling behaviors of university students, and the motivational and social dynamics behind these behaviors. The primary research problem is to understand the impacts of online gambling on young adults and explore how new media literacy can address these effects. The study addresses questions related to motivations for engaging in online gambling, game preferences, emotional responses following wins or losses, impacts on social and financial lives, and the sustainability of gambling habits. The research was conducted using qualitative phenomenological research design, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 university students. Thematic analysis was performed on the interview data, using MAXQDA 24 software. The key findings indicate that peer recommendations and social media play significant roles in motivating individuals to start online gambling, and that slot games have the potential to keep users engaged on the platform for extended periods. Additionally, the study reveals that the social, financial, and emotional impacts of online gambling on individuals are dynamic and multifaceted. New media literacy is critically important in raising awareness about online gambling content and minimizing its negative effects. CR - Albarrán-Torres, C. (2018). Digital gambling.
