This article aims to examine the socio-cultural roles of ribats in medieval Eastern societies. Initially established as military strategic points, ribats gradually evolved into centers for religious education, hospitality, charity, trade, and cultural interaction. This study discusses the role of ribats, particularly in border regions, in ensuring safe passage between societies and supporting social order. Additionally, it emphasizes that ribats were important centers for religious education and cultural interaction, where different ethnic and religious communities came together to develop new ideas and artistic movements. Ribats also stand out for their role in social assistance and hospitality. These structures, which hosted travelers, merchants, and dervishes, made significant contributions to daily life and strengthened social bonds. The article reveals that ribats represented much more than just military functions, showcasing their contributions to the spiritual and cultural fabric of society, highlighting their multifaceted role in the medieval Eastern world. In conclusion, ribats in the medieval Eastern world were indispensable not only as military defense points but also as key elements in the cultural, social, and religious life of societies.
