While the region had an important role in the making and sustaining of the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires, the colonial Britishers saw it as a prerequisite for controlling their colonies in Asia. During the Cold War, it invited attention from the Americans and Soviet Russians alike as they competed to establish their dominance in the region because of its growing importance in energy transportation. Parallelly, with the Turkish straits being key to the Mediterranean, it also brought the attention of Cold War actors to Turkey.
