Young people, the actors of the digital age, are considered the most eager group in the use of technological tools. Among these tools, smartphones in particular have become an indispensable part of their lives. The prolonged and intensive use of smartphones leads students to become dependent on these devices. Smartphone addiction negatively affects university students not only in psychological, social and physical aspects but also in terms of their academic success. This study, which investigates the effect of smartphone addiction on academic achievement, was conducted with a sample of 1002 students from Istanbul University, Ege University, Akdeniz University, Selçuk University, Ondokuz Mayıs University, Atatürk University and Dicle University in Türkiye. The study employed a quantitative research method and used purposive sampling, one of the non-probability sampling techniques. According to the analysis results, there is no statistically significant difference between participants’ gender, smartphone addiction levels and general academic achievement levels. However, smartphone addiction has a statistically significant negative effect on participants’ overall academic achievement.
