AB  - Bu çalışma, 1962 yapımı Arabistanlı Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) filminde Osmanlı askerlerinin nasıl temsil edildiğini, Roland Barthes’ın göstergebilimsel çözümleme yöntemiyle incelemektedir. Edward Said’in Oryantalizm Kuramından hareketle, Batı sinemasında Doğu toplumlarının sıklıkla egzotikleştirilmiş, ötekileştirilmiş ve stereotipleştirilmiş biçimde sunulduğu kabul edilmiştir. Araştırmanın temel amacı, filmdeki Osmanlı askerlerinin görsel anlatımlar üzerinden nasıl yapılandırıldığını ve bu temsillerin Batı merkezli ideolojik söylemlerle nasıl ilişkili olduğunu ortaya koymaktır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma deseni benimsenmiş ve Barthes’ın iki düzeyli (düz anlam ve yan anlam) göstergebilimsel çözümleme modeli esas alınmıştır. Filmde Osmanlı askerlerinin yer aldığı 20 sahne, sinemasal unsurlar da dikkate alınarak analiz edilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, Osmanlı askerlerinin genellikle zayıf, dağınık, ahlaken yoz ve Batılı kahraman figürünün karşısında edilgen bir biçimde temsil edildiğini göstermektedir. Bu temsiller, Batı'nın Doğu üzerindeki kültürel ve ideolojik tahakkümünü meşrulaştıran görsel anlatılar olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, sinemanın ideolojik temsil üretimindeki rolünü ve kültürel belleğin inşasındaki etkisini tartışmaya açmaktadır.

N2  - This study analyses the representation of Ottoman soldiers in the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia through Roland Barthes’s semiotic method. Grounded in Edward Said’s theory of Orientalism, it assumes that Western cinema often portrays Eastern societies in exoticised, stereotypical, and marginalised ways. The primary aim is to reveal how visual depictions of Ottoman soldiers are constructed in the film and how these representations align with Western-centred ideological discourses. The research adopts a qualitative approach, utilising Barthes’s two-tiered model of semiotic analysis—denotation and connotation. Twenty selected scenes featuring Ottoman soldiers are examined through key cinematic elements, including gestures, costumes, lighting, and camera angles. Findings show that Ottoman soldiers are predominantly depicted as weak, disorganised, morally corrupt, and passive figures positioned in contrast to the heroic Western protagonist. These visual narratives function as ideological tools that reinforce Western superiority and legitimise the subjugation of the East. In this sense, the film serves not merely as historical fiction but as a cultural artefact that perpetuates hegemonic representations of “the Other.” This study highlights the role of cinema in producing ideological meaning and shaping cultural memory through visual representations embedded with symbolic and mythic significance.
