AB  - Batı düşüncesinde mekân ve yer kavramları arasındaki ayrım özellikle 20. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından sonra farklı disiplinler aracılığıyla sorgulanmış ve yoğun bir tartışmanın odak noktası haline gelmiştir. Mekân kavramının soyut veya sonsuz geometrik tasavvurunun aksine yer kavramı mekânı yaşamla, insan deneyimiyle ilişkili olarak anlamamıza aracılık etmektedir. Mekânın ve yerin karşılıklı olarak ilişkilendirilerek tartışıldığı bu süreçte, batı sanatında da sanat nesnesinin mekân ve yerle kurduğu diyalog dönüşüme uğramıştır. Batı kültürünün mekân ve yere ait ayrı olarak geliştirdiği tanımların aksine Japon kültürü bu kavramların bütünleşik ifadesini veren “Ma” kavramına sahiptir. “Ma” kavramı mekânı, zamanı, olayları, insan deneyimini birbirinden ayrı şeyler olarak değil birleşik olarak tanımlar ve mekânı içsel bir duyum aracılığıyla anlamlandırır. Bu bağlamda “Ma” kavramı yer duygusunu da vurgulayan bir anlama sahiptir.  Anlam açısından oldukça geniş, tanımlanması zor bir kavram olan “Ma”, aynı zamanda bir tür görme biçimi olarak antik Japon sanatlarının estetik ilkesinin temelini oluşturur. Ma sanatları olarak bilinen antik Japon sanatlarının yanı sıra çağdaş Japon sanatı da “Ma”ya ait bir duygu taşır. Bu makalede Japon yaşamının tümüne etki eden “Ma” kavramı yer duygusu ile ilişkili olarak ele alınmış ve bu bağlamda Japon çağdaş sanatına etkisi seçilen örnekler aracılığıyla sorgulanmıştır.

N2  - In Western thought, the distinction between the concepts of space and place has been studied through various disciplines and become a central focus of intense debate particularly since the second half of the 20th century. In contrast to the abstract or infinite geometric conception of space, the concept of place mediates our understanding of space in relation to life and human experience. In this process, where space and place are discussed in relation to one another, the dialogue established between the art object and space and place in Western art has also undergone a transformation. In contrast to the separate definitions of space and place developed in the Western culture, Japanese culture possesses the concept of “Ma,” which offers an integrated expression of these notions. The concept of “Ma” defines space, time, events, and human experience not as separate entities but as interconnected elements, and it attributes meaning to space through an inner sense of perception. In this context, the concept of “Ma” also encompasses a sense of place. Semantically broad and difficult to define, “Ma” constitutes the foundation of the aesthetic principle in ancient Japanese arts, functioning simultaneously as a particular way of seeing. In addition to the ancient Japanese arts known as the “Ma arts”, contemporary Japanese art also embodies a sensibility associated with “Ma.” This article explores the concept of “Ma,” which permeates all aspects of Japanese life, in relation to the sense of place, and within this context, investigates its influence on contemporary Japanese art through selected examples.
