AB  - Modern öncesi ekonomik tarih araştırmaları, genellikle politik merkezilik ve uzun mesafeli ticaret odaklı yaklaşımlar çerçevesinde şekillenmektedir. Ancak, antik ekonomilerin kapsamlı bir şekilde incelenebilmesi için mikro ekonomik sistemler, üretim süreçleri ve yerel dinamikler göz önünde bulundurulmalıdır. Afganistan’daki arkeolojik çalışmalar, büyük ölçüde anıtsal mimariye odaklanmış olup, günlük ekonomik yaşama dair veriler sınırlıdır. Bu noktada, Baktriya Ekonomik Belgeleri, Afganistan’dan gelen evlilik sözleşmeleri, vergi listeleri ve ekonomik işlemler gibi geniş çaplı kayıtlarla, bölgenin ekonomik yapısına dair benzersiz bir perspektif sunmaktadır. Toharistan bölgesi, Sasani, Akhun ve erken İslam dönemlerinde siyasi ve ekonomik bir geçiş noktası olarak önem taşımaktadır. Bölgenin ekonomik yapısı, madeni para basımı ve yerel krallıkların kontrolü altında şekillenmiş, zamanla ticaretin Sogdya’ya kaymasıyla tarımsal üretime yönelmiştir. Baktriya belgelerinin sunduğu veriler, bölgenin geç Sasani ekonomisi içindeki dönüşümünü anlamada kritik bir kaynak olarak değerlendirilmektedir. Bu çalışma, Baktriya Ekonomik Belgeleri üzerinden Toharistan bölgesinin ekonomik dinamiklerini incelemekte, siyasal ve ekonomik özerklik ilişkisini değerlendirmekte ve antik ekonomilere dair yaygın metodolojik yaklaşımlara eleştirel bir bakış açısı sunmaktadır
