Çalışma, bakım, güvenlik ve özerklik gibi değerlerin hem tasarımcılar hem de kullanıcıaileler ve çocuklar tarafından nasıl yorumlandığını ve maddi özelliklere (renk, malzeme, form) nasıldönüştürüldüğünü araştırmaktadır. Yöntemsel olarak, çocukların özne olarak kabul edildiği, görüşmeler ve yaratıcıyöntemlerle desteklenen katılımcı gözlemle desteklenen etnografik yaklaşım benimsenmiştir. Bulgular, bakımınyalnızca teknik bir tasarım kriteri olmasının ötesinde çocukların öznel gündelik deneyimlerinde, aktif olarak yenidenmüzakere edilen ve şekillendirilen dinamik bir toplumsal değer olduğunu göstermektedir. Makale, çocuklarınsosyoteknik yeniliklerde epistemik aktörler olarak nasıl konumlandığını ve bu katılımın bakımın hem teknik hem detoplumsal boyutlarını nasıl yeniden tanımladığını tartışmaktadır. Söz konusu yaklaşım, çocukluğu toplumsal vetarihsel olarak inşa edilmiş bir kategori olarak ele alan eleştirel çocukluk çalışmaları ve teknik sosyoloji literatürünekatkı sunmaktadır.
