AB  - Amaç: Bu çalışmada Balıkesir ili sınırları içerisinde yer alan Sındırgı ilçesine bağlı Aktaş, Düvertepe, Düğüncüler, Gölcük, İzzettin, Karacalar, Kertil, Kürendere, Sinandede, Taşköy ve Yüreğil kırsal mahallelerindeki geleneksel ekolojik bilginin (GEB) yapısı ve ekonomik etkinliklere yansımasıyla birlikte bu bilginin nesiller arasındaki farkı incelenmiştir. Böylece bahsi geçen mahallelerdeki insanların bulundukları mekândaki doğaya ve çevreye bakış açıları ile davranışları, tutumları ve organizasyonları ele alınarak mekânların GEB kapsamındaki sürdürülebilirliklerinin anlaşılması hedeflenmiştir. Yöntem: Araştırmada nitel araştırma deseni kullanılmıştır. Bu kapsamda toplam 30 katılımcıyla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmeler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Görüşmelerden elde edilen veriler, 52 kod, 5 alt tema ve 1 temaya dönüştürülerek MAXQDA 24 programı aracılığıyla çözümlenmiştir. Bulgular: Bulgular, yerleşimlerin tarihsel arka planında Yörük kültürünün, ekonomik pratiklerde tarım–hayvancılığın ve sosyal yapıda köy hayırları gibi kolektif ritüellerin belirleyici olduğunu göstermektedir. Katılımcı ifadeleri, GEB’in hem doğa karşısında bir uyum mekanizması hem de toplumsal dayanışmayı besleyen kültürel bir unsur olarak işlediğini ortaya koymaktadır. Sonuç: Genç nüfusun köyden uzaklaşması, iklimsel belirsizliklerin artması ve ekonomik dönüşümler, GEB’in aktarımını kırılgan hâle getirmektedir. Nihayetinde, kırsal sürdürülebilirliğin yalnızca çevresel değil, aynı zamanda sosyokültürel süreklilikle ilişkili olduğu, GEB’in korunması için topluluk temelli uygulamaların güçlendirilmesi gerektiği belirlenmiştir. Özgünlük: Bu çalışma, GEB’i sürdürülebilirlik tartışmalarında yalnızca bir çevre bilgisi olarak değil, kırsal mekânın inşasında belirleyici bir toplumsal ve kültürel faktör olarak ele almaktadır. Bu yönüyle çalışma, GEB literatürüne mekânsal ve kültürel bir derinlik sağlamasının yanı sıra, sürdürülebilirlik çalışmalarında yerel bilginin konumuna dair yeni bir bakış açısı da sunmaktadır.

N2  - Aim: In this study it was investigated the structure of traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) and its reflection on economic activities, as well as intergenerational differences in this knowledge, in the rural neighborhoods of Aktaş, Düvertepe, Düğüncüler, Gölcük, İzzettin, Karacalar, Kertil, Kürendere, Sinandede, Taşköy, and Yüreğil, which are located within the district of Sındırgı in Balıkesir Province. Accordingly, by addressing local residents’ perceptions of and interactions with nature and the environment in their lived spaces-together with their behaviors, attitudes, and forms of organization—the study aims to achieve an understanding of the sustainability of these places within the scope of TEK. Method: A qualitative research design was employed in the study. In this context, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a total of 30 participants. The data obtained from the interviews were analyzed using the MAXQDA 24 software by being transformed into 52 codes, 5 sub-themes, and 1 main theme. Results: The findings indicate that Yörük culture plays a decisive role in the historical background of the settlements, agriculture and animal husbandry shape economic practices, and collective rituals such as village feasts are central to the social structure. Participants’ statements reveal that TEK functions both as a mechanism of adaptation to nature and as a cultural element that nurtures social solidarity. Conclusion: The outmigration of the younger population from rural areas, increasing climatic uncertainties, and ongoing economic transformations render the intergenerational transmission of TEK increasingly fragile. Ultimately, the study concludes that rural sustainability is not solely an environmental issue but is also closely linked to sociocultural continuity, and that community-based practices need to be strengthened in order to safeguard and sustain TEK. Originality: This study addresses TEK not merely as a form of environmental knowledge in sustainability debates, but as a decisive social and cultural factor in the construction of rural space. In this respect, the study not only adds spatial and cultural depth to the literature on TEK, but also offers a new perspective on the role and positioning of local knowledge in sustainability studies.
