KW - An Jia KW - Sogdlular KW - Kök Türk Kağanlığı KW - Sabao KW - İpek Yolu N2 - This study re-evaluates the place of the Sogdian-Türk political and commercial alliance in sixth-century pre-Islamic Turkic history by examining the tomb of An Jia (安伽, 518–579), discovered to the north of Xi’an in 2000, within the context of the rise and dissolution of the First Türk Khaganate. A Sogdian of Bukharan origin, An Jia held the titles of both sabao of Tongzhou and Grand Military Commander (Da Dudu) within the Northern Zhou bureaucracy. In Turkish scholarship, the history of the Türk Khaganate has largely been written through the Orkhon inscriptions and Chinese dynastic histories, while the Sogdian actors who played roles in the administration, diplomacy, and commerce of the khaganate have remained in the background. The twelve panels on the stone funerary couch of An Jia’s tomb document his face-to-face diplomatic relations, alliance negotiations, and ceremonial encounters with Türk ruling circles; these panels also contain some of the earliest known depictions of the Türks from the period of the First Türk Khaganate. Rather than offering a purely iconographic interpretation of the tomb, this study examines the available evidence through a comparative reading with written sources. By considering Chinese dynastic histories, Byzantine sources, particularly Menander, and Sogdian written materials together, it demonstrates that An Jia was not merely a merchant but a multifunctional intermediary operating along the Türk-Chinese axis and its Byzantine connections. Comparison with Maniakh and Wirkak shows that the Sogdian-Türk relationship was not a bilateral connection, but a triangular network linking Chinese, Türk, and Sogdian interests. The article aims to introduce little-known figures such as An Jia into Turkish historiography and to assess the institution of sabao from a Turkological perspective. Its conclusion is that the administrative and diplomatic capacity of the Türk state cannot be adequately explained without taking Sogdian merchants and bureaucrats into account.
