This limestone plateau with a limited amount of water and resources is covered with dense maquis, and in some parts woodlands can be observed. Due to this naturel structure most of the settlements are established in the poljes which have more suitable conditions in terms of land and water supplies compared of other parts of the region. The agriculturel potential of poljes is one of the essential factors which determine the demographic size and development of the settlements around. In fact as the opportunities of irrigable agriculture are so limited, in this area the main agricultural product is tabacco. This fact prevents the agricultural potential of the poljes, and hinders the increase of the population families can support. For this reason the population of most of the settlements which are established on poljes remains unchanged or it gradually decreases. Since the livelihood of the villages on the plateau is limited, these villages constitute the ones which have the least population and are economically underdevelopment. Muğla is the only urbanized settlement in this region. The factores which make contributions on the developments of the this city are that it was established on the largest polje on the region, it is on the intersection of main roads, it is the city governing center and is in a way affected by tourism. The governing function plays an important role in the development of Ula, which is the second largest settlement in area. But the population of this town shows a steady increase. Bayır, Akçaova, Muğla, and Kötekli are the settlements most affected by the transportation of the region and therefore, they have the population which increase the most rapidly in relation to other settlements. Although the coast of the province is one the leading tourist resorts in Turkey, Muğla and its surrounding is considered not to benefit sufficiently from the tourism facilities nowadays. On the other hand, as a result of the revival of contruction sector depending on the development of the tourism, marble quarries were started to be exploited widely and so more marble factories were established.
