By 2020, about 4.4 billion people will live in cities, nearly 60 % of world population. Furthermore rapid and unplanned urbanization has been causing degradation and depletion of natural resources as well as threatening physical and mental health of urban residents. Urban-induced serious environmental pressures include depletion of ground water, pollution of soil, water and air, and losses of ecologically significant and sensitive lands and their flora and fauna. Urban environmental problems adversely affect both urban-industrial ecosystems and rural ecosystems, and hence, necessitate the development of sustainability-oriented policies. This paper discusses especially environmental consequences of urbanization and the significance of sustainable urban development and environmental management. The roles of stakeholders in the process of urban management are briefly identified and evaluated in order to compare conventional and participatory approaches for urban planning and management. Some basic measures and recommendations are discussed towards how to create sustainable urban settlements in terms of environmental, social and economical aspects.
